El Calafate: Discovering Argentine Patagonia

“Do you want to play in the snow?”… If so, El Calafate is the ideal destination for you!

Since I was a child, I always wanted to know Patagonia. In fact, I always liked the cold, but the landscapes with glaciers caught my attention more.

When we finally decided to travel to this region, it was difficult to choose the final destination. There is the Patagonia Chilean and Argentinean, and both offer beautiful city options.

We almost decided on Pucón, in Chile, but in the end, it was El Calafate that won us. I didn't regret it for a second.

How to get there

To get to El Calafate, leaving Brazil, you need to go to Buenos Aires and from there you can take a flight to the cold little city.

El Calafate

El Calafate is much less acclaimed than the traditional Bariloche, but it doesn't lack anything in terms of beauty, on the contrary, it has one of the most beautiful scenes I've ever seen.

We went in August and got cold and snow. The cold is intense, and on the streets we always wore gloves, ear protection and a coat. Using this, everything is fine, you don't need anything much.

Snow Park

Now if you are going to visit the snow park, they may charge for waterproof clothing to go up, and even if they didn't ask for it, it is highly recommended. The cold there is biting.

On the way up the cable car I had pain in my hand, but it got better afterwards. We play in snow and we rented those ice slide tubes.

It's a super cheap tour and has snow in abundance, if it is in snow season, of course. At certain times the park is not even open.

Glacier Tour

Another tour that was worth every penny was sailing through all glaciers. It was a more beautiful landscape than the other.

The tour leaves super early, still in the dark and freezing cold, so there is an inevitable sleep during the boat ride (which is warm, fortunately), but just arrive before midnight. glaciers that sleep goes away.

With luck, we witnessed some ice falls on the water. The color of the water is actually beautiful, glacial water It's an unbelievable blue.

The city

Snow and ice aside, El Calafate It is a very charming city, where you spend very little and eat very well.

The central region is lovely, full of souvenir shops and restaurants. Everything has a charming and simple architecture, nothing too sumptuous, the atmosphere is cozy everywhere.

In ice cream shops it is common to find “calafate” ice cream, a typical fruit from the region. Jam from this fruit is also sold in stores.

For those who want to save money, it's worth snacking on the famous Argentine empanadas, sold in almost every restaurant. The price is unbelievable, you eat cheap and they are great.

For those who are pressed for time, in 3 or 4 days you can make the most of it and go to the main points, but whoever has the opportunity to spend the week will certainly have a lot to do.
